They were at one time some of the most loved breeds amongst all who Knew what dogs were such that the vocabulary, pit bull became a word for the best sportsmen. The dogs once reputed as icons of bravery and agility in bull baiting sports and man’s best friends in hunting have had their niche reshaped completely. An anti pit bulldog sensation swept over and the dog became the criminal who could protect drugs for some human felon, who had natured it that way. State institutions had to find a way to curb the human-dog relationship and the dog became the sitting duck in this new order.
In 1974, The New York Academy reported that dog bites had increased by 37%. Following this, an associated press published a paper titled Dog bites: An Unrecognized Epidemic (Delise 8). The media propagated sentimentalism against pit bull dogs that led to a follow up of reports and recommendations on dogs whose consequences allowed the law to seize and destroy the animals without the owner raising alarm (Bastian). Those who owned the dog faced harder times than ever when the breed specific legislation that targeted those who owned pit bull dogs meant less reception of the animal by the society.
Since its breeding in the fifteen hundreds, the dog has evolved from the usual war dog to be man’s companion in hunting, in service and indoor pet and ‘nanny’ for children. The dog has proven over time that it can make a good friend when natured well. Alienating and isolating it, is hence not the best approach there is rather people should be allowed to keep the pit bulldog.
