Should single people be able to adopt children as easily as couples?
The law gives couples and single people equal rights to adoption. However, in some countries or States, the law tends to favor couples more than single people, when it comes to child placement. In Arizona for instance, preference for placement may be given to a couple than to single people despite all other considerations being equal. In India, the single adoptive parents may face more strict adoption rules over their couple counterparts. The country’s law is strict on the age requirements of the adoptive parents. Also, the law in India does not allow child placement between single males and female children.
It is however important and reasonable to give equal adoptive rights to couples and single people, so long as the constitutional thresholds are met (Rauhala, Ann). As much as there would be a common believe that a couple is at a better position to take care of children that the single people, the believe may not always be true. Unless proven otherwise, single people should be considered as capable of adopting and raising a child as the married couples.
Among other requirements, a person should demonstrate willingness, ability to take care of a child for him or her to be considered fit to adopt a child. Being a better person to adopt a child should not be based on marital status alone, but should go a step further to consider the love and ge...
