"American Literature: 1914 to 1945"
Modernism refers to a practice that is In conformity with modern times regarding behavior, techniques, thoughts as well as practices. African Literature 1914-1945 describes the various trends of modernism in patterns and themes via poems and fiction. Fitzgerald's "Babylon Revisited."

The society movement to its destruction comes into play when Charlie Wales consider his drinking as important dismissing family issues such as neglecting his daughter. His friends, Duncan and Lorraine, are only concerned with partying together. Richness and wealth are clearly elaborated in the beginning, and the difference between the wealthy and the ordinary Is clear, the rich according to Fitzgerald are by knowledge and experience. The classes of creamy and rich and poor are still in existence even today. The story represents a more realistic and modern family relationship, and he also warns people of the consequences of alcohol.
Faulkner’s “Barn Burning.”
This is a story of Sartoris, a young man experiencing a desperate moment of fighting between family and justice, the modernity in this text is portrayed by the boy's complexity of consciousness who has common beliefs and justice for his father against the barn owners. Faulkner’s story represents modernism in three phases, consciousness, time and space. He uses a freestyle narration shifting consciousness from one point of view to another; he also uses a nonlinear story telling not taking into consideration the time aspect. The temporary change is also elaborated defying the well-known writing methods. Faulkner’s carries a theme of family versus the loyalty to the law, for instance, the Snopes family values the loyalty to the household as superior and above everything else. Peace is paramount for Sarcoidosis as is surrounded by violence and conflict. Darkness is also a theme explained as significant episodes occur in darkness, and this darkness promises nothing but despair and crime. The two themes of the story, hopelessness, and sadness as a result of changing societal desires display a form of modernism. This is better exhibited by the metamorphosis of Gregory into an insect due to being unhappy with his position.
Pound’s “In a Station of the Metro.”
This poem is quite short, and its length is very deliberate as it depicts the constant motion of train as it moves by. Proud employs modern approach by avoiding flower adjectives usually used in many poems by using very few descriptive words to get the message across. For instance, the topic is just “In a Station of the Metro” Pound further uses petal images to describe the mass of humanity, he connects the flowers and trees with humanity in that all are constantly growing and changing. The short poem gives the reader a chance to imagine nature when pound describes the faces as petals on a wet black bough. The fragility of life is a theme carried along to mind this poem via the melancholy tone. Life is fragile too in the modern world and can be lost if not taken care of. Pound uses the word apparition to describe something that fades in and out of view; this word expresses the surprise is seeing a huge number of people at the station.
Hurston’s “How It Feels to Be Colored Me.”
This is an autobiography of Hurston's story describing vividly the journey she had to travel into self-realization. She is born in 1891 and passes on in 1960 and during this period racism is prevalent as well as oppression. She is raised in an all-black town, but she does well in her writing emphasizing the insignificance of one's color in one's skin. There are racial inequalities during this period in America, but Hurston never places any significance on this subject by using imagery by welcoming people to her state, Florida. Through education Hurston can demystify the complexities of the African-American society by doing research as well as writing, this is a good representation of modernism as education has been a liberator even in today's society. Horton is outspoken and does not let the societal limitations hold her back in her dream, and she goes past these obstacles to receiving an education. Horton as well as her characters exhibit the sense of courage and determination and appreciation of the people. She also cognizant that the African heritage is important in the identification of cultural identity which is the case today thus clearly demonstrating modernity.
Hemingway's “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.”
