John Winthrop's "A Model of Christian Charity," which inspires the Puritan mission to become a "city
upon a hill."
This prevailing concept of American Exceptionalism also pervades the mindset of later generations of
Americans who will follow course. But what exactly is it that makes America exceptional? We have often
held ourselves, as Winthrop's congregation did, as a beacon of light for others, what Lincoln called "the
last best hope of the earth." Consider the inscription on the Statue of Liberty that reads, "Give me your
tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." We have held ourselves as a refuge of
light. But are we? Should we be? Does America offer something special? Something that sets it apart
from other nations? Now, nearly 400 years after the passengers of the Arbella climbed ashore, do we
still think of ourselves as a "city upon a hill"?

Short answer on American literature
The American concept of exceptionalism has distinguished citizens of the United States by how they recognize themselves globally. Literature from many individuals has set a strong and positive mindset to readers and the current generation. For instance, Winthrop wrote in the book of “A Model of Christian Charity” that they are going to become a “City on a Hill,” where all eyes of people from other regions will look. John Winthrop reminded the Puritan Christian community that they had to fulfil the prosperity chance given to them by God. He tells them that “…we shall be as a City upon a Hill, the eyes of all people are upon us; if we deal falsely with our God in this work, we have undertaken and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us…” (Winthrop, 32). Winthrop created a sense of confidence and high self-esteem in this community to an extent when everyone believed by perfect and unique. They kept in mind of the city to be built on a hill where everyone will admire and emulate it.
