Cell Phone use is Dangerous
The use of cell phone has been taking the center stage in the recent debates, more so with the advances in technology. The use of cell phones has become inevitable especially with the attachment that people are developing with their mobile gadgets. Most people would agree that their life would be meaningless without their phones. Other cannot even stay for hours without their phones. Some people become “sickly” when some of their phone applications fail, justifying their level of attachment with the devices. Therefore Cellphone use is dangerous, and people should minimize it because it results into road accidents, is associated with ill health, and affects relationships.
First, cellphone use is dangerous, and people should minimize it is because it results in road accidents which have serious effects. According to the National Safety Council 2014 news release, cell phone use is approximated to be responsible for 26% of motor vehicle crashes (National Safety Council). In the article “The dangers of driving and talking on the cellphone,” Purssell Roy states that the utilization of the cell phone while driving impairs the peripheral view, and makes it difficult to see objects that one would have no difficulty spotting. He further continues to state that the users of cell phones have impaired reactions that can account for a higher number of accidents. Pursel further uses Redelmeir and Tibshirani report to argue that using a cell phone while driving presents a risk equal to that of driving with higher blood alcohol levels. The fact that 8% of drivers use cell phones while driving creates more worry and calls for return to sobriety in terms of responsible driving. It is thus clear that driving while using the phone presents a high risk of accidents, making it a very dangerous practice.
Besides causing accidents, using cell phone is dangerous and should be minimized because it is associated with ill health. According to Nathaniel Mead, cell phone use exposes the users to low energy radiations that can result in increased risk of brain tumors (422). In the article “Use of mobile phones and risk of brain tumors: update of Danish cohort study,” Patrizia Frei, Poulsen and Johansen use a nationwide cohort study to explore the association between cellphone use and tumors of the brain, and though the results seem a bit conflicting cannot rule out the increase in risk especially with periods exceeding 10-15 years ( 1). Myung et al. in the study “Mobile Phone Use and Risk of Tumors: A Meta-Analysis.,” review literature and conclude that there is likely link between cellphone use and higher risk of tumors (5570 ).
In addition to causing accidents and ill health, cell phone use is dangerous and should be minimized because it affects person to person relationships. Przybylski Andrew and Netta Weinstein in the article "Can you connect with me now? How the presence of mobile communication technology influences face-to-face conversation quality,” reveal that the presence of a cellphone can affect human relationships, and the effect is clear especially when people are involved in important topics such as relationship matters between couples (1). The increasing functionality of cell phones results into addiction which eventually has a negative impact on the person to person relationships with the increased attachment associated with the sophistication (Roberts, Petnji and Manolis 254). Omotayo Banjo, Yifeng Hu and Shyam Sundain in the study “Cell Phone Usage and Social Interaction with Proximate Others: Ringing in a Theoretical Model,” prove that cell phone users are less likely to offer help, a justification of inhibited person to person relationships (127).
In conclusion, cell phone use is a dangerous activity, and people should rethink about the use of cell phone. Cell phone use c...
