Helena Maria Viramontes’ “The Moths” is about a young girl that undergoes a significant transformation in life from a rebellious and irresponsible person to a responsible individual. The short story, narrated in the first person, revolves around religious imagery and the rites of passage. The young girl struggles with relating to everybody except her grandmother, Abuelita. Death is a significant aspect presented in the short story, as the narrator’s realization of death’s nature causes a substantial transformation in her character.
The duty to take care of her grandmother led to the narrator’s transformation from a rebellious person to one that desired connection with her family. She started to understand death's nature, which became part of her thoughts on numerous occasions. She personifies the sun when thinking of death's nature by claiming that when it sets, it demonstrates that it is defeated and cannot exist forever despite being powerful.
