Children of a lesser God is an American romantic film following two lovers who are employees at a school for the deaf. The love is between a speech teacher and a custodian who faces challenges in expressing their love to each other due to the deafness of the lady. James starts his job as an instructor at a school for the deaf, where he meets a deaf lady who works in the custodian's department. James develops a love relationship with Sarah Norman, which develops romantically despite Sarah's complicated relationship with her mother due to her deafness.
During this period of the love relationship, James was at the age of 35 while Sarah was 19, but this did not stop them from loving each other. The story's central theme in this film is the relationship between children and their parents. It conveys that parents share a strong bond with their children. The film shows how the need or urge to change from isolation is changed by loved ones in a unique way because of their religious or cultural connection. It shows that despite any difficulty in communication, the message can be sent in its beauty and respect.
The type of communication disorder in this film is deafness. The relationship is between James, a teacher with no disorder, and Sarah, a deaf lady who works as a custodian. James tries to talk to Sarah through a plan with her boss to meet her, but He gets rejected several times, but finally, she agrees to go on a dinner date, and she dances from afar as James watches. Through the conversation, James notices that Sarah's friends were treating her usually despite her inability to talk or hear (Wolfe, 2021) He notices that Sarah does not like interacting with men because she was once a victim of sexual abuse.
James and Sarah's love begins when James proposes to her in a swimming pool, kisses her, and both have sex inside. Sarah's deafness makes the school principal warn James that the relationship will not work, but He insists that He will stay because He loves her. James organizes a dance with his students on the stage with parents as the audience, which makes Sarah upset and develops a conflict between them. Sarah thinks that James hates her due to her inability to talk, which is not the case. James tries His best to hear Sarah speak, but his inability to make her speak upsets him. These differences make them part ways as Sarah goes to live with her mother, making James chase her but not find her.
