COMMUNITY RESEARCH PAPER DRAFT
The American society is becoming economically polarized while at the same time more racially with time. Specifically, many people in the country support the fact that the criminal justice system is based on racism. According to research, almost two thirds of African-Americans believe that the criminal justice system in the country is fully against them. Many groups agree with this, especially advocates in civil rights. However, a lot of conservatives are in denial, with the claim that the system is not racist in any way whatsoever. This research project will incorporate ideas and arguments from several past researches about racism and criminal justice system. The project will argue the issue on its own perspective while at the same time, source ideas and claims from a variety of sources, critiquing and supporting different aspects.
David Cole, a professor at Georgetown University bases his explanation on the fact that there is no equal justice system in America, as the system can highlight African Americans as criminals without even undergoing investigation. Paul Butler argues that the jury should set free the black defendants on cases that are non-violent but rather risk the lives of the defendants, such like drug possessions, perjury and burglary. Andrew Kahn and his fellow Chris Kirk explain how it is like to be an African American in the criminal justice system, describing it as disadvantageous. Michelle Alexander gives a credible explanation of how the blacks are subjected to legalize discrimination. According to the award winning journalists, Jeff Brazil and Steve Berry, the police in America stop and conduct search on people on roads and streets, based on their color. Additionally, Bill Quigley provides examples of racism in the criminal justice in America, arguing that the system is meant to prevent the African Americans from any progress. A complete overview of a jail term and the activities involved is provided by Whyte Alan and his coworker Jamie Baker. An interview based on the issue is also conducted, to provide a definite view on the same, first hand.
