Topic; Comparing Sotomayor and Madden to evaluate the plight of impoverish student
Students from poor backgrounds are predisposed to factors that deter them from seeking basic education, which increases the high numbers of illiterate and people who have not graduated with high school diplomas. Aside from poverty, students of color face systematic and structural discrimination, actively working against them as they seek an education to improve their economic condition and empower their community. Sonia Sotomayor was born in the Bronx to parents who had immigrated from Puerto Ricco (Pomona College, 2015). She grew up in poverty and had chronic diabetes, which increased her cost of living. However, despite all the obstacles, she becomes the first woman of color and the first Nuyorican to become an associate of the supreme court. Sonia Sotomayor went to study in Yale, an ivy league college, where she experienced a similar problem as outlined by Vicki Madden.
Vicki Madden outlines that students attending college from low-income areas must exchange their backgrounds, life, and culture to adopt a new way of living to be accepted in the demanding college life. Despite the requirement to diversify the portfolio of colleges to incorporate people from lower economic classes and people of color, the schools barely incorporate the student into the program to promote their success. The hostile environment created by the immense difference in cultural and social economic status creates a hostile psychological environment that decreases the success of students from low-income backgrounds in colleges (Vicky Madden ,2014). There are various programs designed to help low-income students, and other effects are made by specific institutions where teachers are equipped with ways to assist such students. Grants and federal loans are used to reduce the economic strain on students. However, there are intricate choices that have to be made. Still, individual student and as they stand at the precipice, have to decide whether to conform to survive, which present an internal personal struggle.
