Description of the initial connection
Emily’s decision for a divorce paints a picture of the conflicting perceptions between her and Cal. The fact that they had shared love for a significant amount of time suggests that Emily had been living a lie for a long period. Since they fell in love while still young, it prevented Emily from clearly understanding the type of companion she would wish to marry. Love always seems genuine during its initial stages but slowly fades with time.
