How Dictionaries Have changed over the Centuries
It is noticeable that the way ‘Truth’ is defined has changed over the three Webster editions of 1828, 1913 and the recent edition. The first edition (Webster's 1828) is largely based on certain examples derived from the Bible where “truth” is used on numerous occasions. It is contrary to the latest edition which has only one example that is related to the Bible. The first edition is extremely narrow, and one may recognize the purity of language. The 1913 edition marks transition point between the first edition and the second edition. It is less restrictive with more freedom of mind and opinion. Compared to the first edition, the second edition is more relaxed with a lesser obsession for the purity of language. The second edition marks a point where people had learned to think and speak freely. It is the point where people had known their rights better, including the right to be open with regards to vital aspects of their culture.
