SERIAL SEASON 3, EPISODE 8: A MADMAN’S VACATION
In Serial season 3, episode 8 Joshua recounts his involvement in juvenile gangs. He tells Sarah Koenig about various juvenile gangs like Heartless Felons, Head Busts, and D Delta in his residential area (Serial Season 3, Episode 8). The juvenile gang violence in the United States has steadily increased based on Joshua’s story. He says, “A whole other unit, ran in, ran on my unit and it was like a big ass like big riot (Serial Season 3, Episode 8).” The United States government has made juvenile gangs more influential and scary because it does not protect people who provide information about such gangs. In Serial Season 3, episode 8, Koenig states that the government has failed to protect people who inform security authorities about such gangs. The juvenile detention facilities orchestrated gang violence among kids from opposing gangs. For instance, prison guards used children prisoners as their proxies to attack others kids who attacked one of the guards (Serial Season 3, Episode 8). Additionally, some female guards paid juvenile inmates to have a sexual relationship with them (Serial Season 3, Episode 8). To this end, the series highlights an increasing number of children joining juvenile gangs and implicates the United States’ government failure to overcome children’s involvement in gang violence.
Dealing with juvenile offenders is a major problem in the United States. The number of juvenile offenders cases in the USA dropped substantially between 1994 and 2012, but the cases’ numbers started to increase in 2016 (MST Services para. 1-3). The most common crimes linked to juvenile offenders include aggravated assaults, robberies, rape, and murder (MST Services para. 5). Equally, security authorities in the Serial series arrested Joshua for aggravated assaults and robberies. For instance, Koenig states that security authorities charged juveniles with crimes like homicides, rapes, and serious assaults (Serial Season 3, Episode 8). The juveniles ensnarled into the justice system had limited employment skills, dropped out of school, and had limited pro-social skills (EBP Society para. 3). Indeed, juvenile crimes are common and problematic in the USA despite the decline.
SEASON 3, EPISODE 9: SOMETIME WHEN EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED
Serial Season 3, episode 9 highlights reasons for children’s engagement in crime. The criminal justice system makes inmates less skilled to secure employment and does not train them to mingle with societal members. For instance, Joshua only related with his accomplices because they understood him and accepted him, unlike other people who alienated him (Serial Season 3, Episode 9). Additionally, Joshua did not have any employment link to secure a job to avoid returning to crime for his livelihood (Serial Season 3, Episode 9). The criminal justice system denied Joshua a chance to stay with his parents after their arrest for different criminal acts. The parents’ absence contributed to Joshua’s involvement in criminal activities because his grandparents were unable to guide him to avoid delinquent behaviors (Serial Season 3, Episode 9). Parenthood influences children’s behaviors and their life choices. To this end, the episode highlights factors that contributed to Joshua’s involvement in crime and the justice system’s weakness in fighting crime.
Various factors like poor parenting, low child care quality, and pro-social skills absence contribu
