The captivating piece “the Dungeon Master” is highly informative about the Dungeons and Dragons game. Involving a teenage narrator, Sam Lipsyte takes the audience through the real and fantasy world of the game. An apparent feature of the essay is the writing style. Lipsyte employs the dialogue approach in his book to show the interaction between the characters in the story. The characters exchange ideas and opinions through dialogue enabling the reader to understand them and make judgments. However, this essay discusses how the use of dialogue weakens Lipsyte’s narrative piece.
Dialogue is a powerful device used by many authors to express the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of their characters. The use of dialogue in “the Dungeon Master” is unrefined and course. The prose of the narration is choppy, and there is little or no transition between scenes. There are many instances that the reader is confused whether the narrator was daydreaming or playing the game. For example, the narrator talks of befriending a blind man from whom they steal silver coins (Lipsyte 4). The fact that the blind beggar is talking about a dragon in a cave at Mt. Total Woe leaves the reader confused whether it happens in fantasy or the real world of the narrator.
The continuous alternations between the mental and physical world of the characters leave the readers confused. The use of dialogue does not offer any help to the reader in the transition between both worlds. The lack of clarity in transition weakens the id...
