Introduction to Adversity
Adversity can be defined as an instance or a misfortune that a person may undergo. Ideally, adversity can be; fate or incident or unfavorable fortune marked by calamity, misfortune, or distress (Krupnik, 256). Life always has ups and downs. People inevitably go through adverse conditions in their day-to-day activities. Specific circumstances in life tend to be negative, thus becoming unfavorable to people. However, learning how to embrace situations with dignity and grace can benefit a person's life journey—in comparison, learning how to embrace adverse life situations, the critical roots of character development. Therefore, when a person can learn any lesson from their misfortunes or embrace adversity, individuals can learn different lessons. Realizing an adverse situation by an individual requires deep familiarisation with oneself while still learning to embrace the case. Understanding the benefits of facing adversity and steps that a person can take to overcome trauma caused by adversity builds a background for this essay.
Generally, people go through hardships and life difficulties that are inevitable in life. Facing adversities in life can be very challenging, causing too much pain to break a person or even make a person. Life adversities also result in personal improvement by figuring better ways around challenges. Furthermore, others may end up engaging in drugs when such adversities become severe in their lives to reduce the psychological tortures caused by hardship.
There are categories of adversity that a person undergoes in their lifetime. They include; mental, physical, emotional, financial, spiritual, and social adversity(Ajnakina, 202). Mental adversity is associated with mental illness or any mental problem. Thus, in case of any mental trouble, a person should seek help from a psychiatrist or psychologist. Physical hardship can be due to the physical complexities of oneself.
An example is a physical disability. A person with a physical disability may experience unfavorable life moments that may even cause trauma. Another example of physical adversity is if an athlete experiences a career-ending injury that leads to a total change in their life. Furthermore, being physically deaf, blind, or obese causes a person to strive to achieve life goals.
On the other hand, social adversity occurs when a person is completely limited to social skills, thus extreme difficulties in getting a job, maintaining a family unit, or even making more friends (Marini, 305). Individuals can solve social adversity through developing life skills. Spiritual trouble is associated with the ability of a person to have enough faith. Having faith in life helps develop compassion, love, or hope to cope with life daily. Lastly, a person experiences financial adversity when the person cannot afford necessities. Failure to afford the basic life necessities prevents a person from living a happy life. In contrast, others become jealous of other people and full of anger.
Despite facing challenges that cause too much pain in life, facing adversities can benefit. Hardships in life help build a personal character (McQuaid, 151). When a person is faced with misfortune in their lives, learning about oneself improves. When things seem to go unexpected, it becomes easier to identify the existing barriers. It is even easier to perform best when things go the usual way. Generally, while facing hardship, a person's real character is determined and strengthened. In times of pain and difficulties, a person learns several aspects such as determination, grief, and humility. Every pain makes a person learn new ways of surviving, and no matter what, life must always move on.
Facing adversity in life helps a person learn how to appreciate good times (Santoro, 858). In life, there are always good moments and bad moments. There are certain moments when a person needs something and instantly gets what they want. Thus a person becomes self-reliant because there are no difficulties in achieving their goal. In contrast, when a person finds it challenging if reach a sure thing, the person becomes careful and learns how to appreciate the beautiful moments of life. Therefore, adversity individuals always enjoy good times in life. During hardships, families come together and thus learn more about each other. Likewise, challenges help a person see the positive and good things in life.
Lastly, facing adversity helps a person balance their emotional life (McQuaid, 153). Since adversity causes pain in life, it does not provide the necessary joy to an individual. Hardships keep life from being smooth; thus, too many forces are in place that prevent a person from being in a comfort zone.
When a person is faced with trauma that may be caused by adversity, a person has to undergo stages of recovery. People experience adverse situations that result in trauma due to a threatened danger or actual danger. When individuals are faced with trauma, they tend to remain silent. They become unwilling to share their struggles. Often, they isolate themselves from others and experience self-denial. Trauma causes a person to have low self-esteem and even feel much disconnected from the world.
Therefore, there are three steps that someone can take to overcome trauma issues caused by adversity. First, establish safety. An event that results in trauma destroy's an individual's assumptions about safety (Yeager, 389). Trauma shatters the trust and security of a person. Therefore, persons suffering from trauma need to share their history of trauma with a therapist. Sharing such information with a therapist makes a person feel safe and recognized by society. As a result, trauma is overcome, and one can understand their life desires comfortably regardless of any physical adversity or emotional adversity.
The second step involves remembrance and mourning. Once a person recovers their sense of stability and safety regarding a traumatic event, a therapist will thus need you to process the trauma. According to Herman, trauma is only resolved when a person develops a new version of understanding the adversity
