A dystopian novel presents an imagination of unpleasant state. Unlike utopia, a dystopia entails a totalitarian and degraded environment where everything is unfavorable. Ray Bradbury uses different characters and circumstances that demonstrate dystopia in Fahrenheit 451.Bradbury focuses on the oppression of members of the society through limited freedom.
Ray Bradbury imagines a world in which books would no longer serve any essential functions, and there would be firemen to destroy the books in the whole society. From the text, these book destroyers include Guy Montag and Captain Beatty. They set fire on the houses storing the books. However, Montag later changes his mind when he meets Clarisse who enlightens him about the content of the books (Bradbury 8). The author shows the effect of submissive conformity and ignorance of firefighters. The burning of the books serves as Technocratic means of maintaining social order. It is an approach employed to control population and eliminate any controversial ideas.
Fahrenheit 451 depicts a totalitarian regime that executes an innocent man in the search for Montag (Bradbury 142). Moreover, horrific situations such are the death of Clarisse from an automobile accident and the overdose of Millie emphasizes the dystopia in the novel.
