Instructions:
Fences is a play written by August Wilson in 1983. It is set in the 1950s in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and tells the story of Troy Maxson, a 53-year-old African-American man who works as a garbage collector. Troy is a former star of the Negro baseball leagues who was denied the opportunity to play in the major leagues due to the color barrier. The play focuses on the relationships between Troy and his wife, Rose, his son, Cory, and his best friend, Jim Bono. The play explores the themes of race, family, responsibility, and the importance of dreams. Troy is a complex character who is both a loving father and husband, and a man who is deeply scarred by his experiences with racism and his own personal failures. He is a man who is struggling to make sense of his life and to find a way to provide for his family. He is also a man who is trying to protect his family from the harsh realities of life, while at the same time trying to keep his own dreams alive. The play is ultimately a story of redemption, as Troy is able to come to terms with his past and to find a way to provide for his family. Through his struggles, he is able to build a metaphorical fence around his family, protecting them from the outside world and allowing them to find a way to move forward. In the end, Troy is able to find a way to forgive himself and to find a way to provide for his family. Fences is a powerful play that explores the complexities of life and the importance of dreams. It is a story of redemption and hope, and a reminder of the importance of family and the power of forgiveness. source..

Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Code Date Fences. Troy Maxson can be viewed to be a morally ambiguous character from most of his actions and interactions that act as proof of his uncertainty. One of the instances that reveals Maxson to be a morally ambiguous person when he and his co-worker Bono are having a drink as he narrates about how he and Rose had met. He claims that he had told her that he would buy a banty rooster which would inform him of strangers in the back yard. However after Rose interrupts him claiming that the statement was a lie he rectifies his statement. Maxson states that “Only thing is . . . when we first got married . . . forget the rooster . . . we ain't had no yard!” (Wilson, 4). Another instance where Maxson reveals moral ambiguity when explaining to Bono and Rose about the furniture he had purchased claiming that he paid ten dollars a month for them. Despite relying on Rose to confirm the story she continuously insisted that he was lying. Rose stated “Troy lying. We got that furniture from Mr. Glickman. He ain't paying no ten dollars a month to nobody” (Wilson, 8). Maxson's moral ambiguity is significant to the work as a whole as it helps to create a perception in the audience that he is realistic in his actions and interactions. Applying the concept of moral ambiguity for Maxson is necessary since the audience develops an understanding of negative actions and interactions perpetrated by a character. Another advantage of applying a morally ambiguous character is that it is not only entertaining but also acts as a challenge to the audience with similar actions and interactions. Maxon's complexity reveals that the society of that time perceived the husband to be the head of the family thus had the obligation to provide and ensure positive progression for his household. When his son Lyons asked him for ten dollars he insists that he should look for a job and even promises to seek an opportunity for him in the rubbish but he turns him down. This makes Maxson criticize him for being lazy. He is also against Lyons being a musician and Cory joining a college football team claiming that they had to look for decent jobs to earn a living. Maxon's complexity also has an influence on how he is judged as a character since he has the tendency of believing in self-created illusions which inform mos...
