The God of Small Things
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy is a novel that shows courageousness and rebellion. It is a story that is haunting and touching. It was written in an eerie style that is humorous. The writing style depicts an exact opposite of the various ills that the society faces. It cuts through the societal ills to the level of feelings of human beings. Such feelings can only be found in storybooks of children. Therefore, it displays a clear prejudice in a society with dominant fashion.
The novel is about a woman who in the eyes of her daughter is young. Also, the Christian family in the Syrian setup keeps alternating. The childhood of the girl and the present life keep changing. The story unfolds many changes that took place. It explains issues such as struggles of families in their efforts to deal with divorce, immature deaths, love that is forbidden, and male chauvinism. The young child in the story and her twin brother were alone with their father before they started losing everyone in their family. They even lost each other to the world of sorrow. The mother faces constant conflict from the society which is Indian and conservative. She also meets the burden of losing her children. The book is generally about a mutiny against the illogical ordinance which binds people to their miserable lives.
It is all about the rebellion against the irrational codes that bind us to our every-day miserable lives. From the story, it is clear that the struggle against such regulations allows members of the community to continue pursuing their righteous path which is the only purpose with meaning in such a society. One theme discussed in the book is the laws of love. It prescribes the way of loving. The novel reads, ‘who should be loved, why loved and how much love to give to people.' Such a statement is captivating and compelling since it gets expressed in a way that cannot get forgotten.
Arundhati Roy deals with the issue of love in a way that makes the story captivating. Her narrative is non-linear in that it slowly builds its momentum to the point of blowing steam at the end. It would be irrational for me to call it a suspense novel. Throughout the novel, it is easier to have a hint of the tragedy that will happen later. The book is full of sorrow whereby the author narrates life's tragedies in a single line and then cuts it back to another sentence which acts as a reminder. All the events happen in the eyes of the child, which in such a case, increases grief. Adults tend to accept pain without much protest since they argue that it is how the world gets designed to end. They end up believing that it is the fate of life.
From the children's point of view, lacking prejudices makes it easy to realize that cruelty is all over the world. It makes the reader to pity the innocence of children and still feels sympathetic about their fate. The reader also becomes angry towards what they already know and the things they do not know (Aldama et al., 530).
The book is also funny because it also seems weird. The narrator survives life's tragedies in a way that is mostly associated with the funny part of life. The narrator is maybe having issues, but that's the way she hides it from the public. She tries as much as possible to blend the funny lines with stories that are tragic or rather captivating (Merrill 56).
The book also requires much appreciation compared to other dark things. The novel describes the monsoons of Kerala in a way that puts poetry to shame. The reason is that perhaps the reader cannot comprehend the joy that rain brings in the lives of persons. I collect the few instances and scenes from books as well as movies which bring the impression of joy in my life and then narrate them to others as anecdotes. The novel contains many stories which many people use in their narration. The book is so compelling to the point that it moves one to live differently from others.
In the corporate world, it may be right to classify the book as a feminist banter because the author, Arundhati Roy uses the narrative to bring about the understanding of the suffering that women go through in life. The feminist approach only came to my mind when I read only the reviews. After reading the entire book, I realized that it brings about the notion of love as well as the things that adults assume as normal although they affect our daily lives. The book, of course, narrates stories of different women who face distress and thus, they are appealing to the hearts of many human beings.
The book is just but a collection of many stories that happen in our daily lives. As described in the story, ‘they are the small things that shape our lives.'
