Bangladeshi Health System
Healthcare in Bangladesh is offered in two options: the first being the government-owned and operated medical system called the Human Resource for Health (HRH) provided to the poor or residents are also allowed to purchase privatized medical care at their discretion. According to the World Health Organization, there are six critical components of a well-functioning health system. First, the health status of individuals must be improved. Second, there must be effective leadership and governance to help defend the population against health threats. Third, the people served by the healthcare system must have access to affordable healthcare, especially if they fall ill. Fourth, creating an effective health system that can be accessed by those who live in rural or lightly populated areas. Fifth, allowing people to participate in decision-making regarding their health and the health system. Sixth, one of the essential components is to have factual information on any health-related issues and making those issues known to the people (WHO, May 2010). The health system in Bangladesh inadequately cares for the 161.4 million people in the country. There is a shortage of resources, such as medical supplies, sterile facilities, and medical staff, and a lack of funding necessary to provide primary care to Bangladesh’s residents. Meeting the WHO’s essential requirements for a well-functioning health system is relatively simple; these guidelines set the tone for how the government should operate: open, honest, and equal.
