The HIPAA Privacy Rule provides federal protection for health information of individuals, thus affecting the dealings of entities such as doctors, dentists, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and pharmacies that may transmit this information through electronic medium. Included in the confines of the Privacy Rule are healthcare clearinghouses and business associates. Information protected by the HIPAA Privacy Rule includes those about an individual’s past, present, or future mental or physical health conditions (Rodriguez & Pritts, 2012).
There are three distinct security safeguards in the HIPAA Security Standards. These are the Administrative Safeguard, which ensures the implementation of administrative functions such as assignment of duties. The Physical Safeguards that ensure integrity of electronic systems and equipment and the data that may be contained therein, and the Technical Safeguards aimed at system automation using authentication control techniques such as data encryption, decryption, and use of passwords (Rodriguez & Pritts, 2012). The policies and procedures of the HIPAA Privacy Rule on the other hand are frequently updated to represent the changes that often arise in business and work process. These are also used in hiring and training staff, requiring them to uphold the requirements of the Privacy Rule, while audits are conducted to ensure that entities under the rule comply with the policies.
