‘Race’ and Management Communication
‘Race’ serves as a critical issue in management communication theory, practice, and research within world’s economy. ‘Race’ is quoted to emphasize the need for focusing on race as a socially developed phenomenon that has economic and political expedience and material influences but no biological foundation (Parker and Diane, 292). Quoting the word also serves as an effective way to focus on the concealment that surrounds white privilege and whiteness that has often been persistent within the management of literature.
The postcolonial and vital theories of race remain crucial productive factors that facilitate the revelation of the disguise and silences which surround race and management, which is also known as the decolonization of management scholarship. The critical frameworks for decolonizing management scholarship are often influenced by the full range of perspectives and disciplines that include the subjectivist epistemologies such as womanism/black feminism, Latina critical theory, queer theory, and others, which drew from the knowledge systems, and experiences of groups that were marginalized by the dominant Western-centric paradigm (c Parker and Diane, 292). The frameworks are not implied to be comprehensive of the wide range of understandings possible in critical and postcolonial race theory. Instead, the claims and strategies are rather fundamental in the nature that they are perceived to help counter, critique, and exposing the dominant influences of oppressive racial discourses and ideologies.
