Intercultural Communication is a concept that has been subjected to debate for many years. According to Scott Kiesling's study, community speech involves the set rules and interpretation of expression in a given community. It involves people who share similar norms and regulations within a community set up. The Kuna tribe and the North American fraternity are both speech communities, but they are quite different.
Social integration is an influential factor in defining the speech community and the participants. For instance, in sporting activities, people may use a particular language in communication. The choice of the language does not mean that all the participants are bound to the same language. All languages have their recognizable ways of speaking.
Speech event can help in defining Speech acts in a community. For example, in conversations new terms can be borrowed from a different language. In the Kuna gathering involved integration of two cultures. The two cultures have little in common. The speech events help to bring out the common aspects they have in common. The gathering of the Kuna shows that in the same community there exist disparities in language communication.
In addition, the fraternity meetings act as the social life of students. The members of the fraternity live like brothers. Although these members live as brothers, there exist diverse culture and cultural communication among themselves.
