The story in A&P takes place in a grocery store where three young women go shopping but they are dressed for the beach which is inappropriate for the grocery store. The grocer’s clerk, Sammy notices this but he is too preoccupied admiring the young women that he develops a liking for them and does not complain about the way they are dressed.
Sammy feels frustrated with his job because his manager dismisses the three young ladies telling that that they next time they go shopping dressed for the beach they should at least cover their shoulders.
The girls represent the wrong decisions that people sometimes make in life because of the thin line between what they consider right and wrong or good and bad. Because of their dressing, the girls look appealing to Sammy that he forgets that the grocery store is a public place that is frequented by families and kids. He fails to see the inappropriate nature of their dressing and falls for their attractive bodies.
