Life is a journey completely marred with uncertainties. Lawrence Robinson and Melinda Smith (2020) argue that while many circumstances may be outside our control, a person’s mindset is the single most vital tool that influence coping mechanisms and ability to face the unknown. The duo further notes that although uncertainties have always been around us, they have never been more so than today heightened by the current COVID-19 pandemic. There is uncertainty over employment, the economy, relationships, finances, mental and physical well-being. According to Robinson and Smith, we all have different capabilities and varying degrees to tolerate and handle uncertainty in life. While some people may derive pleasure from living unpredictable lives and taking risks, some find the unpredictability of life a deeply distressing challenge. In this paper, I will discuss and evaluate the impact of looking too far ahead (or behind) and determine whether it would be effective for me, my family, and community during the pandemic. Additionally, the paper underpins my plan for handling worry and uncertainty as we continue to face the pandemic.
According to Kate Morgan, one of the best ways to handle worry and uncertainty is by avoiding to contemplate too much about an unforeseeable future and an unchangeable past. Morgan argues that worrying about the past and what is to happen only leads to persistence thinking which breeds and piles negative thoughts. Morgan further notes that although regurgitating and forethinking help to assort and learn from past mistakes and prepare for the what is to happen, their impact generates an overbearing mental load that can be exhausting. Further research shows that rumination on the past and pondering about the future is pegged on the subsequent inception of and duration of anxiety and depression. the more people tolerate and live with these thoughts and worries the higher chances they develop psychological conditions. This also affects the length of time one would have to live with these complications.
Looking too far in the past or in the future such as how better you should have lived to avoid your current plights or how the COVID-19 vaccine should be developed and distributed do not really impart positive cognitive outcomes. However, learning to defer rumination and worry ton a later appropriate date can help reduce the likelihood and duration of psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety. For instance, by deciding to postpone worry by scheduling a decision-making process to a later date and committing oneself to bearing with uncertainty until then. Although there is no conventional recipe for how everyone should handle uncertainty, Morgan argues that avoiding and postponing worry and renumeration makes a whole lot of differences in the long run.
