Introduction
Mental health is an essential and integral part of human health; according to the constitution of the World Health organization, health is the state of complete well-being, physical health, and not only merely absence of illness or infirmity. (Lui et al. 40) Psychological, social, and biological factors are the determinants of one mental health; for example, the events of violence and social-economic factors can be regarded as risks to a person's mental health; the clearest evidence is usually sexual violence.
A very large percentage of college counseling centers director surveyed said that the number of students with psychological disorders is a growing issue in the center or the colleges. Many by-products and indicators of the psychological disorder have begun to emerge among college students in recent years at a very higher rate. (Smith et al. 2) The prevalence of depression, suicide, anxiety disorder, and other stress-related problems have increased at a very higher rate, and it calls for people to reverse the situation. According to the research done, it has been proven that stress is factor number one that affects the overall academic performance of college students.
Stress, physical health, and mental health among college students.
It is very difficult to break down the demographic of stress, depression, and mental health; during the college years, stress and depression increase where a person's emotional and physical health goes down. (Smith et al. 15) There are a lot of associations that have come up which try to address the issues facing the college students, such association focuses on the stress-related problems, and their impacts on the college students among student in details, unrelenting stress and inability to deal with stress can lead to one developing suicidal thoughts, suicide is the one of the leading cause of deaths among most of the college students. Most college students do mask their depression and their feeling of suicidal thoughts from their loved ones.
Some of the physical illnesses among college students, such as headaches, are caused by stress and mental illness problems; when college students cannot deal with the stress, it becomes part of themselves where they have to live with it. It does manifest as physical illness. Researchers suggested that even a minor degree of depression can cause a very substantial risk. Stress usually does cause an effect on the immune system of a person through the change of behavior of person's behaviors such as alcohol consumption and smoking, which are adopted as a mechanism to cope with stress.
Causes of mental illness and stress among college students
Numerous factors are causing post-stress psychological disorder and mental illness among college students today. One of the causes of stress is a very bigger desire for success among college students; most of them desire to achieve higher grades even if they are working in a very challenging learning environment; this causes a lot of anxiety among the student. Most students will tend to overwork themselves and forget their well-being, especially if they work on procrastinated assignments. Procrastination itself can be a way of coping with the anxiety of very high grades.
Financial worries are another factor causing stress among students. (Zhang et al. 22) College expenses have in recent years gone upwards with a very high percent; this leads to college students taking loans to sustain themselves and pay for their school fees. These loans taken by college students are stressors to them where they wonder how they will pay back those loans. In addition to this, most of the textbooks and other supply materials are very expensive. You will find these students working in one or two to sustain their academic learning; doing work and still going to school can cause stress and anxiety.
Most of them are uncertain about the future. Most college students enter college without deciding on a major. Lack of major leads to them not knowing what they want to become after university; it can be very difficult for them to decide what they want to pursue as a career.
