Miss Adela Quested
Mr. Forster’s book: A Passage to India presents very interesting characters. Although Dr. Aziz is quite fascinating and one of the principal characters, I find Miss Adela Quested the most puzzling and therefore she is my character of choice.
Miss Adela goes to India with Mrs. Moore, both from England in the endeavor of discovering and experiencing the real India. They have different experiences throughout the plot of the book. At this time of heightened racial and cultural tensions between the English and the Indians, we can learn quite a lot from Adela especially the moment after visiting Marabar Caves.
From the story, we learn that before the visit to the caves, Adela had realized there is no love between herself and Ronny. With no intention to hurt, she asks an ill-thought question to Dr. Aziz while touring in the caves, (Tony 14). The question annoys Aziz, who slips to one of the caves to recover. Adela goes to another cave, and she is likely fearful and experiences some mental turmoil of Aziz attacking her. Although she is not sure, she reports this to the British authorities who have Aziz arrested upon return from the caves.
The moment between visit to the caves and Aziz’s trial to acquittal is the most astounding in the book. Readers get attracted to reason as to what Adela has been thinking during this time. The author portrays her as one swimming between emotions and thoughts (Tony 20). One wonders if her decision to accuse Aziz was to avenge on her failed love with Ronny. A critical thinker cannot stop asking as to whether that would have been her reaction or approach should Aziz have been English. On the other hand, is there something deeper beyond the digestion of the ordinary mind? It is still fascinating to see her change of mind to say in the court that Aziz did nothing to her.
