Myrtle’s Unrealistic Dream of Marrying Tom Buchanan in “The Great Gatsby”
Myrtle’s character in “The Great Gatsby” ideals of marrying Tom Buchanan is like living in an infinite fantasy that can never be fulfilled. Besides her constant foreboding almost immediately when she states, “You can’t live forever, you can’t live forever” that she repeats over and over in an ominous tone, it is clear that the two couples are headed for disaster in one way or another (Fitzgerald, 2000,121). If she were as intelligent as she makes herself out to be, she would have recognized Tom for the dominant brut of a man that he was.
Her lack of recognition of this fact is depicted when she describes the way the two initially met. “When he came into the station, he was next to me, and his white shirt-front pressed against my arm, and so I told him I’d have to call a policeman, but he knew I lied. I was so excited that I got into a taxi with him I didn’t hardly know I wasn’t getting into a subway train” (Fitzgerald, 2000,121). This brut of a man arrives next to her in a menacing manner and the only thing she can think about is how attracted she is by it. Tom is controlling and authoritative and she equates that with what the true definition of masculinity is. He even tells her the reason he cannot leave Daisy is because she is Catholic and they do not believe in divorce when that is obviously not the prominent reason.
