Melchior Hazard is a film star, known for putting his career before his family and he is a selfish person. Because, firstly he goes to Hollywood and produces a version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” this play written by William Shakespeare. The production ends in a disaster way. In which Melchior leaves Lady Atalanta and he elopes with the wife of the film’s producer. And he leaves his two daughters Saskia and Imogen. Secondly, on the 2lst birthday of Saskia and Imogen he announces that he is going to marry the best friend of Saskia. Finally, he doesn’t consider Dora and Nora as his daughters. Because they would bring him shame.
Melchior is an insensitive person. It is shown when he sees his daughters as he doesn’t have any affection towards his daughters. Dora says “He looked at us but did not see us”. He doesn’t see his daughters at all. In addition, Angela Carter criticizes the attitudes that men have towards parenthood. Because of Melchior, Dora and Nora grow up without the knowledge of what is a father until the age of seven. A father should be their side, to protect them, to make them feel secured. But they don’t have these feelings. However they have Granma Chance which she supports them and she explains for them what a father is. Moreover, Melchior is used to show how women pick the pieces that men have destroyed.
