Literature documents Planets of the Apes and the movie divergent.
The novel Ape planet takes the world upside down.Jinny and Phyllis while roaming in a spaceship yacht, correct a manuscript written by Ulysee Merou. The document contains the main story. It is intended to act as a warning to the humans about visiting individual planets as there are termed dangerous. The year is 2500A.d.
Ulysee recounts his story of an adventure trip that he made with a scientist friend Professor Antelle. They board a starship and land in a planet that was similar in resemblance to the planet earth. They named the planet Soror (sister).A purge in the jungle brings them to contact with a human girl named Nova, She probably belonged to the white tribe of this planet. The girl appeared to have some difficulties in speech.
Soon it dawns on them that the human beings of this planet are largely resilient. They have been overthrown by the gorillas and apes. The human-like animals attack the explorers and destroy their ship. This attack leads to death of many human beings and Nova and Ulysee are captured. The captives are caged "like big African apes”. The gorillas and apes conduct lab experiments on captured human beings. For instance Ulysee is force to copulate with Nova this intimacy leads to the birth of a salient son.
It is satirical to discover that even the couple Jinns and Phyllis are an ape couple. Reading the novel and comparing it to the movie Divergent (2014) offer an explanation of themes that science seeks out about human traits in outer planets. They explain human beings and choice of doing things. The movie set at a future date, one hundred years after the war that destroyed the world. Beatrice explains that the earth was destroyed for it was terrible. In order for the people to maintain order, they have divided themselves into factions. One of the rules governing the city is minimal exposure to mirrors. Exhibited in a scene when Beatrice’s mother only allows her a very short time to view her reflection. She explains "rules are rules”. Tolly, the administrator of the test questions Beatrice’s obsession with mirrors.
In a thematic explanation, one is hindered from reflecting on their personality. Totally depending on the test to reveal them to themselves. One gets to choose the camp they belong to once they attain the age of maturity. Divergence is the condition of not belonging to a particular faction. It is a rare condition. Therefore a predicament to one who fails to identify their faction. There are five factions in the movie divergent; the smart ones, the intellectuals(erudite) , Conde (juries), soldiers and the stiffs. A misfit in this organization arises with the factionless.People that do not belong to any group.
These factions offer a similarity between the novel and the movie. In the novel, there are three groups of individuals: The aggressive gorillas, Pedantic and conservative organtuan administrators and the liberal chimpanzee intellectuals. These categories of people and individuals offer an essential description of people's characteristics.
The novel gives predictions of human behavior that led to the downfall of the Benguela planet. Human beings used to run the world, they held other animals as servants but somehow lost control and were driven out into the jungle by the animals. These probably were excited by the aggressive gorillas. The novel states that these gorillas owned state of art hunting equipment similar to those of European hunters. In the movie, this aggression is depicted by the soldiers.
They have redefined their training to instill courage. Eric and Four, the Trainers, states that a courageous person should not surrender during a combat. The training requires pushing the capabilities to breaking points.Four states that it is both physical and mental while Eric says that one who is not able to endure gets cut from the faction. Eric is the more aggressive than Four. There is also the mock knife throwing where the target is not supposed to flinch or otherwise will be thrown out of the faction. This type of aggression would lead to the downfall of the faction. The co-trainer reminds Eric of this and the standards of their training. It is dangerous as it would lead to the death of warriors who are supposed to serve the town.
Laxity and careless attitude exhibited by the intellectuals. In the novel lab experiments are carried out on human beings. These tests cause the death of Professor Antilles. Mishap among the lab technicians enables Merrow and Nova to escape. In the movie Tolly relaxes and lets the star off the hook even after she is clearly unable to choose. She advises her to fake sickness to her folks. Consequently, Beatrice decides according to her fancy and joins the soldiers. "I always thought they were amazing, brave fearless and free," this predetermined notion makes Beatrice join the soldiers.
This was contrary to what was expected of her. Jolene Mathews , friend to Beatrice’s father, states,"I want you to choose who truly are and where you truly belong, not on a whim. Not because you wish to be someone you are not, but because you honestly know yourself…." she further states that the faction system is composed of living cells. Therefore, for it to survive peo...
