Reflection
Undoubtedly, throughout the semester, I have learnt many things that have helped in my growth as a writer. One of the major things that I have cultured is how to size up content. I have understood how to review large amounts of information and write the significant parts of it in a few pages. This has helped me express myself better, especially in academic writing. Another skill that I have learned throughout the semester is the clear expression of ideas. This ability has enabled me to write stories that have a particular desired effect on the readers. The final thing that I have discovered about myself as a writer is that I enjoy writing stories from my preceding experiences. This can be associated with the ease and flow of writing down the experiences.
Through the semester, I have also learned about the distinctions that exist between creative and academic writing. Academic writing is mostly procedural and rigid since it is meant to deliver purely data, knowledge, and information. I personally do not enjoy the writing process of academic papers. This is mainly because the desired effect to the reader of the paper is limited to information delivery only. On the other hand, creative writing involves the artistic expression of one’s own ideas and feelings. This form of writing tends to be more enjoyable to me as it is expressive as well as enjoyable to write and read.
I have learned numerous skills from research process. During the writing of my paper on female Arabs in France, I acquired a couple of skills from that writing process. First, I acquired the skill of scheming. This was achieved through the method of looking for information that could be incorporated into the essay. Another skill that I gained through the entire writing process was the sizing up of information that was significant and relevant to my specific area of study. In addition, I also learned how to express the acquired information in my own words based on how I had understood the material. Later on, I had to arrange the information in a systematic manner so that the academic paper can have a steady flow of ideas. This was done in order to enable the paper to convey the message to the target reader.
Throughout the semester, I have also learned how to consider several factors prior to writing my essay. They are the ways of expressing oneself with regard to the rhetorical context, style, genre, purpose, and target audience. I understood the importance of establishing the purpose of the particular writing prior to the commencement of the writing process. The purpose may be to express oneself, deliver information or even entertain. The audience is also a significant factor that is considered prior to the writing process. A writer should consider who he/she is writing the particular paper for or who is targeted by the paper. This leads to the proper satisfaction of the target reader as the writer achieves his desired purpose. The other significant factor is the genre. I learned the significance of the genres since they have a particular method of presenting the information. The material can be delivered in the form of reports, letters, poems, parodies, and many more. Finally, the style’s significance is also essential in the preparation of writing. The writing style is what creates the uniqueness of a particular paper.
Currently, I am planning to extend my studies and eventually work as a col...
