The Relocation of Native Americans
The movement of Native Americans from their country is argued to be one of the worst decisions in the history of the United States. The Indian Relocation was so devastating to so many people forced to move to cities that never welcomed them that their experiences are often framed in histories of federal government policies that came after. This Relocation is claimed to have been motivated by a desire to assimilate Native Americans and to keep them from assimilating into mainstream US culture and disappearing as distinct peoples, as well as a need to find jobs for the rising number of migrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries (Gampa et al. 2020). There were some cases of Native American people living on and off reservations, relocated to reservations, and many Native Americans who were forcibly relocated or voluntarily relocated themselves as social and economic conditions changed and family and community ties proved too strong to sever.
Notably, the Relocation influenced the actions of the American Indian Movement, which pioneered several generations of Native American resistance to the federal government, in the 1960's peace, sovereignty, and land-rights movement, in the 1970's land-title claims movement, and in the 1980's economic movement. The Mission of the American Indian Movement is to work for the sovereignty of the American Indian people. It is argued that the American Indian Movement failed in helping Native Americans regain their citizenship rights, and it deteriorated into white-supremacist fringe groups.
Significantly it was known that some Native Americans had experienced a kind of missionary method, a process of forcibly adopting some Native American groups to the dominant culture of Europeans, while some had resisted it. The boarding schools reflected a form of this missionary process, which
