Rhetorical Analysis Of American Commercial Was (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

Analyzing a Commercial
Objective: Practice your skills of rhetorical analysis by analyzing a television commercial. You will need to select a television commercial no shorter than 30 seconds and no longer than a minute. You cannot use any of the commercials we have discussed in class.
This video should be publicly available video on YouTube or another public, video uploading site such as Vimeo or Dailymotion. If you use Facebook video, make sure that the video is publically available.
Analyze the video. Look for the use of each of the three main rhetorical appeals. Evaluate their effectiveness. If you do not think you see one of the appeals being used, explain how it could have been used in this ad.
Points to consider:
• Who is the target audience?
• When was the commercial first aired? If it is not recent, do you think it would be effective today? Why or why not?
• Is this an American commercial or was it directed at another country?
• Make sure to look at the visual features of the advertisement as well. Is it visually appealing? Why? What about the expressions on the faces of the actors (if there are any)?
• What about the music, audio, sound effects, or voice-over? All of these features can be part of a rhetorical appeal. How do the qualities of these features make the commercial more (or less) effective?
Target length: 400 to 500 words.
Due date: Thursday, September 28th at 11:59pm.
Turn in your assignment on Blackboard. Make sure that your post contains a working link to the video.

Rhetorical Analysis: EnergyAustralia 1-minute Commercial
The commercial is about EnergyAustralia’s new line of energy production. The purpose is to inform the public (Australians) of EnergyAustralia’s determination to provide clean, renewable energy solutions. The speaker in the commercial is a representative of EnergyAustralia Company. He adopts a sentimental tone to appeal to audiences who had, at a point in their lives, experienced demerits of unclean energy. The author also uses rhetorical appeals, visual features, sound effects, and music to achieve different goals in the advert.
At the onset of the advert, the speaker sets his audience on the listening and viewing path by acknowledging that humans are naturally ingenious (EnergyAustralia, min 00:09). His true aim, however, is to annotate the content of the commercial in advance. He achieves this by applying a soft background music coupled with consistent video displays (with evidently happy characters) that not only create an entertaining atmosphere but also builds on the audience’s understanding of the speaker’s message.
Through the application of logical appeal, the speaker manages to argue and present his case to the target audience. The first instance of this is when he states “all that comes out of someone’s head as a challenge, however unlikely, forces one to think of ways to find a solution, and nowhere are those solutions needed more urgently than the world of energy” (EnergyAustralia, min 00:30). Through this appeal, the author manages to explain why creating renewable energy solutions is a compelling commitment of the company.
The speaker also uses pathetic appeal to invoke the audience’s emotion and gain acceptance plus approval for the information or ideas expressed in the commercial. For example, towards the end of the video, the speaker states; “because when we put our heads together, who know what can be next?” (EnergyAustralia, min 00:50). With this assertion, the author achieves the viewers’ sympathy and compassion to subscribe to the commercial’s theme.
Additionally, it important to note that the speaker remembers to factor in the credibility and character of EnergyAustralia by applying the ethica...
