Education is considered as a critical factor in the development of any country. In the contemporary world, it is regarded as a basic right which should be freely accessible to all students. This essay seeks to demystify the reasons why State colleges should offer free education.
There are many socio-economic benefits that countries gain by making college education freely accessible to everyone. First and foremost, the modern-day world which is regarded as a global village requires well trained and highly skilled graduates to spur its economic agenda. Free college education provides an increased pool of well trained and highly skilled labor which is required for economic development and the economy is therefore able to attract foreign investment. Secondly, education is regarded as an economic equalizer. This means that it helps to lessen the gap between the rich and the poor by giving poor students an equal opportunity like their rich counterparts. Consequently, economic status quo is neutralized (Kane 26).
From the social perspective, free college education leads to a more educated population which has the ability to exercise choices with regard to lifestyle, nutrition and jobs. Last but not least, it is important to note that college educational is not entirely vocational. Colleges not only provide students with technical expertise, but also train them to interrogate, evaluate, synthesize and develop new knowledge which is an incredible resource to the general society (Kane 27).
