SITES Rating System
The article discusses the Sites Rating System, which is a promising framework for managing climate, controlling and mitigation of floods and carbon storage. SITES play a significant role in the restoration of the ecological system and other related fields. Certification offered by SITES is dependent on the points earned by a project. The certification used by SITES allows a variety of projects to benchmark against the various criteria by using the SITES online. For any site to participate in the program, certain conditions should be met. Moreover, having a building in the area is not recommended. Consequently, the program allows sites of a minimum of 2000 square feet to participate in the program. The conditions apply to both projects involving new constructions and existing buildings that require undergoing major renovations.
The program, SITES, is designed in a way to accommodate pre-existing conditions, regional differences, as well as, different locations such as urban, rural, suburban, undeveloped and developed areas. Any project undergoing the program can earn up to 200 points from 48 credits. The rating is determinant on the impact of a site in sustaining, protecting and rebuilding the ecosystem. Additionally, a project acquires credit if it meets some of the goals of the program. For example, the goals include ensuring the future supply of resources, creating regenerative systems, set up and strengthen the market through various designs, and enhancing both human and community well-being.
SITES mainly aim at sustaining the environment. Therefore, the program has numerous benefits to the facilities management. Some of the advantages include a reduction of water demands, reducing and filtering of the storm run-off provision of the wildlife habitat and improving air quality amongst others. The SITES provide the benefits mentioned above in various ways since a person can only utilize their areas in a way that is beneficial to both the community and the environment. For a long time, the environment has suffered severe destruction due to human activities such as construction. Therefore, the program is efficient in the sustaining and the restoration process of the environment.
