Since ancient history, man has tried to improve his way around his lifestyle to make things work easier and more effective. Man during evolution, designed tools to hunt and collect food for his survival. He would not have accomplished this without having a need to achieve. Weapons were created to hunt and for protection by designing them though craft. One can say, man was skilled at designing a tool but from another point of view, man can be viewed as intelligent.
For technology to come to existence, man had to think and get creative. For instance, in the 15th century, people used stones to grind and crush food to make it suitable for consumption. Later in the 18th century, man designed a pestle and mortar tool, to grind food to finer granules which was more suitable. In the 21st century, we can attest that blenders in our households are being used t grind food resulting into a very fine result, almost into a liquid state. Man has proved throughout the centuries that technological advancements has impacted greatly in our society. Not only in our homes, but also in our working environments, learning institutions and the entire world as a whole.
While keeping in mind the positive changes technology has impacted the world today, we cannot turn a blind eye to the negative implications that has faced humanity. As a result to the ease of transportation of people from one place to another, deaths of innocent lives, congestion on the transportation systems and pollution in the environment has resulted. However, we cannot resort to going back to using animals, wheel carts or other forms of traditional transportation. Technology has also affected our environment and humanity through various ways such as: production of unhealthy processed food, production of toxic wastes from industries, ecological changes in the environment due to rapid industrialization and many more. Man is aware of these negative effects although he may perceive to not be as dangerous to the generations in the near future.
Technology has also eroded the cultural and social set up that governs a society. Technology has really changed our means of communication. We no longer need to rely on traditional forms of sending and receiving information. In the modern society, we have witnessed improved communication worldwide through the internet and the social media. Social media such as: facebook and twitter has revolutionized social interaction among people in a formal and informal ways. Organizations and other forms of institutions has fully exploited technology in maximizing communication worldwide. Advertising, marketing and customer services have gained a firm foundation in the internet and as a result, it has greatly impacted the economic growth of a nation. In an informal way, people are able to communicate faster, easily and effectively through social media. However, there has been raise in antisocial behavior, depression and lack of proper and effective communication skills especially among the youth. As a result, a person may turn out to be socially crippled to the extent they cannot have a proper conversation or even ace a job interview.
In our current society, we may observe that technology has increased the availability of employment opportunities due to the growing needs that has accompanied technological change. There are now employment in the IT field, mechanics for automobiles, industrialists, online tutors and many more. However, traditional jobs such as blacksmiths, cobblers, and herbalists have been replaced by machines. Regardless of better production of goods and services, technology has become biased on people who have formal education only. Traditional jobs are seen as irrelevant and old fashioned which is not the case, especially in the developing countries in the world. They should be phased out completely, but made more modern to fit the needs of the growing and changing society.
Technology has invaded privacy as people can access any information concerning any person. This may compromise a person’s security such as their money and personal information. As much as technology has created barriers in form of firewalls in people’s accounts and computers, hackers and cyber criminals have managed to expose compromising information about a person, steal money and impersonation for further crimes.
