Like in most literature materials, the writers are having the motive to keep the readers on toes. A less exciting piece of writing is not very popular among readers. Avery other reader is looking for something that can thrill them. The writers have specific targets on the readers. However, for learning purposes, the writers may not be too much inclined at making the type of impression. Many at times, readers have difficulties in making out the meaning of the story. Authors develop the storyline and make their presentation based on the plot of the narrative, by so doing the author creates an instance of suspense that subverts the expectations of the reader.
Personally, reading stories I may be tempted to judge the story by the fast look, however, it is always not the case. Like in the case of the of the yellow wallpaper story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, I interact with the two characters actively. There are the woman and the husband. The wife appears to be suffering from some mental instability. The husband is physician (Perkins, page 259). Reading that story I expect the writer to tell me how the doctor understands the condition of his wife and she says ‘' john would just laugh off '' (Perkins, page 259) the writer uses irony as a stylistic device to subvert the expectations of the reader. It is far from what I expected to end up within that bit of the story. The writer uses a lot of fate twist in the story when the woman describes the new place as disgusting but later develops liking for it. There is that part that the writer describes the premonition by the woman about the paper. The writer says that in the paper there is a creature with nature of a woman that tends to be creeping. At this point, it was so difficult for me to clearly distinguish the subjects, but in the end, it is the woman craving for her freedom. Here the author uses personification in the description of the action of the wallpaper.
In the story of the White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett, the writer presents me with a little girl, Sylvia, who later meets a stranger in the wilderness (Orne, page 86). For me I thought was had bad intentions but turns out good and genuine at the end. The writer calls the young man enemy which automatically sets my mind to thinking that the girl would be killed. At this point, my expectation is subverted as the strangers are genuine and she is not killed. The stranger, on the contrary, calls in a kind voice ‘'Halloa, little girl, how far is it the road?''.(Orne, page 120) In the story, the writer says that Sylvia has got a good understanding of the stranger and that he liked him. Here I expected the girl to be kind and help him in his quest find the white heron bird. The girl does not help him find the bird.
For the third story of the Ghetto wedding by Abraham Cahan, the original mood of the storyline indicates a kind of a good ending. However, the writer gives unsuccessful scenarios in the. Nathan and the wife Goldy are mere survivors in the streets who want to have a wedding. Goldy convince the husband to have the wedding in the hope that they would receive gifts and presents (Cahan, page 3). According to the writer previous wedding has seen many couples get lots of the gifts. The couples make a decision to wed. The writer isolates me from the truth. I only came to learn of how the people never turned up.
There are a number of narrative techniques employed by the writers to achieve the effect: Foreshadowing is a technique used by the writers to help the reader have a glimpse of the future. The writer can literally take the character to the future. Like in the story of the White Heron the writer use the dream f the girl to foreshadow how they would get th
