The Suburbs
The grandiose life that the “Swimmer” settles into is described in detail. Such luxurious and fine things like gleaning pools, unending drinks, caterers, and bartenders are found in every yard where Ned lives. While all these things demonstrate a world of tranquility and pomp, the description paints a picture of homogeneity with almost all households being similar and ready to offer endless drinks, offer entertainment and to schmooze. As time passes and Ned’s becomes less joyous, he begins to see the darker side of this suburban living as some pools get empty and others are murky and full of chemicals (Baym 1638). The residents get more hostile to represent the “swimming down” to the bottom past the surface glitters of the suburbia. This represents the reality of the suburban living where the men lose all that was ever important to them. But they did not notice this when they were “swimming” with full of energy.
