Guns Control
Introduction
Gun control is a domestic process that involves control of manufacturing and sale of weapons. It also regulates modification, transfer and possession of firearms. The policies governing these activities varies depending on the country of concern .for example, countries like the United Kingdom have got very strict policies concerning gun possession but others like the United States have got relatively fewer limitations regarding gun possessions. Gun is a lethal weapon that requires great care while handling it. In countries where it has been legalized, many people including children have learned the techniques of using the gun. Has been legalized for private ownership, The issue of gun control is a hot topic that has to be approached in a two-way aspect to determine whether there is a need to control guns or not.
Having a gun in the residence increase the chances of being a victim to various dangerous incidences. Unfortunately, guns cannot discriminate between innocent bystanders and criminals. A research carried out by Cozic & Charles showed that accidental gun shooting is four times likely to occur in homes as compared to legitimate home defense usage (79). This can occur regardless of the type of gun in possession. To prevent this kind accident, strict laws and measures concerning private ownership of guns have to implement.
Ownership of guns has resulted in a rapid increase of homicide and suicide cases. According to a research done in 1999 by Long and Robert to investigate the impact of gun possession on the entire society, they came up to a conclusion that, gun ownership is directly related to insecurity (119). Gun possession is also dangerous since there are reported cases where children have incurred injuries while playing with the guns. Most criminals acquire rifles in a legal way but later use them to cause distress to innocent citizens. The key to protection and security of citizens is not giving them guns but informing them in the issues of security. The rifles that they can possess cannot be compared to those owned by the military. Some individuals in the society are misguided, and when they are allowed to possess’ guns or rifles, they might cause unimaginable damage to the community due to some careless mistakes. Current laws concerning registration of guns are not adequate for law enforcement. To assist in coping up with criminal activities, record and characterization of guns should be carried out before they are used to perform illegal activities. There are also very many loopholes in current gun regulation and this need to be fixed.
On the other hand, gun control may not lead to a reduction of murder or suicidal cases since they are not the sole weapons that can facilitate this process. It might also not minimize gun-related injuries and also some regulations tend to violate individual freedom. The amendment of the constitution to allow citizens own guns was critical since the government had seen that private possession of guns was necessary to protect and secure citizens (Pierre & Wayne 102). Gun laws will cause punishment to innocent citizens; This is because, criminals will find their way to get arms and citizens will be living at the mercy of armed criminals. Gun ownership also helps citizens fight for their freedom and rights. It was private ownership of guns that helped colonialists fight for their liberty from colonizers. Guns do not kill people, but people do it themselves. We need to pay more concentration to the morals and values of people and also try to limit media which is glorifying crime and other armed activities. The laws about guns are poorly executed and when the government prohibits possessions of guns, criminals can find their way out and get them
