What Is In A Name
We live in a world where every human being as well as animals and things have names. Names for animals and things have no documentation except for cattle which have identifiable numbers. For humans, they are required to have names that are legal and documented in some sort of paper certificates. These names are entitled to certain rights and obligations that we sometimes enjoy and sometimes dread. Examples of rights are protection from government while example of obligations would be the denial to leave your country (Donaldson 211). The history of names starting about 500 years ago in the 1500s brought into existence what we now call the naming system. For most part of Middle Ages and times before Roman Empire and Greece only nobles, clerics and official persons such as lawyers had fixed and written down names. Their privileges were tied to their names and documents to prove them. The names during those times represented status because the ordinary people also had names but privileges did not apply.
Naming and identity regimes emerges in economic, military, colonial, migratory contexts and social-welfare. Countries with welfare systems have ID cards which is an easy tool to identify individuals as a citizen and the eligible persons for welfare services such as universal healthcare, education etc. Countries that do not have big welfare systems such as United States do not have ID cards (Adler et al, 98).
My opinion is that a name not necessary your name has the capacity to influence a person’s trait. Being named Natasha Moliere by my parents, I was eager to know what transpired into my naming. I did talk to my mother who explained to me that my first name Natasha is a Greek name that means born during Christmas period. My birthday comes in 24th December and therefore the origin of my name.
My second name Moliere was given to me after my grandmother who was named Yvonne Moliere. Moliere in Greek means a person who has interest in art, poetry and music. My grandmother had a great passion in music and was a renowned vocalist in Atlanta county. Like the meaning of my second name, I have over the years established a deep interest in music and art. I am a talented songwriter and keyboardist. However, I cannot attribute this interest into my names rather it is more of a talent in the family linage. Notwithstanding, other big name in the music industry has inspired me to develop my gift in music. Caroline Herring is one example of a big name in folk and country music. If I had not been called Natasha, my name would have been Carolina which means Christmas ...
