Is the American dream achievable?
The United States of America has a national dream that incorporates national democracy, observation of the human rights, liberty, creation of opportunities to all and ensuring that there is equality to all Americans. The dream is to achieve freedom to all citizens which include chances to prosper and succeed. It also includes upgrading of family social class. The dream is to be achieved through unlimited hard work and determination. The dream has its roots in the American independence and is all about ensuring wealth is achieved to everyone. The dream aims at seeing to it that everyone is economically stable regarding having adequate money as well as being happy. At least everyone in America to have a house, adequate food, a car and an adequate cash to spend luxuriously is in the vision of this dream (Andrew, 2016). The dream constitutes of various key elements that include a living wage, security after job retirement, and the chance for the family children to have a bright and promising future.
However, at the present, such a dream to attain this standard of a lifestyle is not achievable. It is not only in America but all countries around the world cannot achieve it. Nevertheless, the dream is true to the wealthy Americans but not workers who earn the average wage. Currently, on the whole world there is no country whereby the average worker has the capability to achieve such a lifestyle if they were to finance the American dream. A research report from The Red Pin asserts that the expenses implied for one to afford the American dream was too high for all workers, all over the world not only in the United States, who earn an average wage. From the research an average worker in the United States earns about three thousand dollars per month after tax is deducted. To achieve the views of the dream an average worker will need an approximated salary of about three thousand eight hundred and forty-two dollars each month. Such an amount is approximately twenty-eight percent increase from the current average worker salary (Andrew, 2016). Such an amount is too high for Americans, even under what circumstances which ever effort and determination they put, to achieve such a dream. Therefore, the dream is impossible for most of the Americans. There is little chance in future for the U.S to see the dream come true for the average working American. To the America majority, the situations are even getting worse and thereby rendering such a dream unaffordable. It is because of the various reasons as discussed below.
To achieve this American dream, it means a great increase of income to the workers has to be done to enable them to meet all the expenses associated with the dreamt kind of life style. However, such an anticipation has also been a dream to the American workers because as research shows, the middle-class workers have not had an increase in their wages or salaries for over fifteen years (Richard, 2014). Since the financial crisis experienced in the year, 2008 middle-class income has been falling. However, income to the wealthy people in the country has been rising. It thus shows that meeting the dream expenses is hard to these average work earners. The rich Americans can talk of attained the dream but not America.
In the previous times, American families from the middle class were in a position to earn a comfortable life while depending on earnings from one family member. It was a time when one parent would go out working while the other remained to take care of their children. However, such moments are no longer there. It is because of increasing household, education and transportation costs in the country. Both parents have been forced to go out working to meet the increased living costs while salaries have all been stagnating in the country (Richard, 2014). No more luxury at home. In fact, having a child is being perceived as a risk to one's finance. In such a situation how shall we even think of living a luxurious life with our families if our income cannot allow us to build a family in America?
Moreover, most Americans are finding life tough because their salaries have failed to meet their expenses. Consequently, a great population in America have had significant debts in attempts to maintain their standards of living (Mennell, 2014). It is thus true that most Americans are in their classes, not because they earn a lot, but because they depend on debts. In a way, we can say that American economy is somehow dependent on debts, given the fact that, there is a significant number of Americans who are observed as being rich but in the real sense, they are because of the additional debts they take.
Equality and education to each and every American is among the key facilitators to achieving the dream. However in the U.S, college education requires huge sums of money that the rich will comfortably afford (Rank, Hirschl & Foster, Pg. 110-120, 2014). Otherwise, a middle-class American will need loans to acquire such education. For instance, it would require a student at Berkeley University to have about thirty-two dollars for on-campus attendance. Such an a...
