Julian Walters Mrs. Todd INST 200 10/14/22 Comparison and Contrast of the Two Recent Articles on the ISIS/Islamic State by the New York Times Introduction In Islamic states, there are issues of war that leads to political instability and insecurity for all citizens. Most of the extremist movements in the region are considered protagonists hence attributed to the current crises. They have enhanced state collapse, exploited wars, and encouraged geopolitical upheaval in the Middle East regions. The research compares and contrasts two articles on the Islamic states of war and how it has affected their lives. Background The Mosul battle occurred in the Islamic states, leading to 800,000 civilians fleeing to escape the fights. Even as it unfolded, two sides of the city faced different fates. The eastern side experienced an easier battle since it was cleared of militants through mild destruction. The civilians returned to their usual activities since schools and shops were reopened (Kamrava). The western side had flattened neighborhoods where most civilians were exposed to live in camps that had barren landscapes surrounding the city. The two articles contradict one another based on the nature of wars conducted in different areas and how the strategies were developed. In Lebanon, there was a rise in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) which led to the fall of the Islamic state. It emerged from the Al-Qaeda remnants found in Iraq. ISIS handled the growing instability in Iraq and Syria by carrying out attacks and bolsters to help restore the situation. Even as ISIL adheres to the Salafi theory, it rebels against most of its interpretations based on the nature used in describing the heretics (Levitt). Most of ISIL’s dialogues highly uphold the Islamic religion and other law manuals as points of reference. It, therefore, prefers to derive its rulings from the Muslim and Qur’an traditions. News Articles Summary The New York Times articles discuss the progress of Iraq forces in Mosul and Lebanon. The first article, "Iraq's Army Advances in Northern Mosul," outlines Iraq’s advance through Mosul in the Northern region and the number of civilians who managed to flee the city. It focuses on the aspect of how Iraq’s forces attacked two regions but left a negative impact on the Northern side. The second article, "ISIS Targets Lebanon, Activists Say," discusses how ISIS managed to target Lebanon with primaries of bombings in recent times CITATION Kam18 \l 1033 (Kamrava). It focuses on the aspect of ISIS and how the city of Lebanon was its main target, leading to massive killings. The two articles contrast on the aspects of Iraq participating in the battlefield at Mosul while the other article describes the ISIL invasion of the Lebanon region. The two articles are similar in perspective and content since the central theme is war in the Islamic state. The analysis indicates that the battles are done on Islamic soil among various groups and military armies. The first article describes the story based on the Iraqi’s perspective, while the second analyzes the information based on the Lebanese point of view. Therefore, it indicates the insecurity and imbalance in the Islamic states based on the killings experienced in Iraq and Lebanon. Also, in the two articles, there is an aspect of using the army and military troops to enhance the effectiveness of the war. There are massive killings of people in the military quests. The first article, "Iraq's Army Advances in Northern Mosul," explains how the Iraqi army has been advancing in Mosul for the longest time. It indicates how the military leaders have encouraged the troops to attack Mosul and encourage instability in the Northern and Southern regions. In the article, there is an aspect of Iraq troops securing the airport and other neighborhoods in their quest for Mosul (Kamrava). The Iraqi military would utilize their equipment by using artillery firearms and tanks to attack the areas. Therefore, when preparing for future battles Iraq opted for a well-organized military troop during the city’s liberation. The people believed that after the liberation they would emerge successful in governing themselves in different ways. On the other hand, the second article considers how ISIS took up the role of conducting battles in Lebanon. It operated beyond Iraq’s borders (Levitt). The article also considers that most of the war events affected Lebanon by altering its capacity to expand to other regions worldwide. They considered that the tribal and religious leaders would present more power in governing them compared to previous times. Therefore, the religious implications determined the effectiveness of the Lebanese battles. The first article considers that the victory was much nearer those fighting ISIS in the Iraq areas hence the need for a fight. According to Kamrava, "this is a fight that few have faced with success." Therefore, it focuses on the ability of the Iraq army to enhance access to the state (Kamrava). However, in the second article, "ISIS Targets Lebanon, Activists Say," there is an aspect of how ISIS targets Lebanon through the use of car bombs and other major attacks. It indicates that Saudi Arabia managed to send troops to Lebanon to help in fighting the ISIS fighters who emerged from Syria and entered Lebanon unexpectedly. The leader Hezbollah played a major role in encouraging the fight against the ISIS forces (Levitt). Therefore, through the use of bombs and attacks, ISIS believes that it can attain victory. The New York Times article "Iraq's Army Advances in Northern Mosul" reports that the Iraqi army is gaining ground against ISIS in Mosul. The article states that Iraqi forces have captured several districts and neighborhoods, including al-Shifa, al-Nukhayb, and al-Tahrir. In addition to these gains, it says that Iraqi troops are now within three kilometers of Mosul University CITATION Kam18 \l 1033 (Kamrava). The article also gives some insight into what led to these recent successes: "The rapid advance was brought about by a new strategy that has relied on air strikes to soften up the enemy in advance of ground troops advancing on them (Kamrava)." Therefore, there are military advancements, such as introducing new weapons to enhance the war in Northern Mosul. On the other hand, the second article, "ISIS Targets Lebanon, Activists Say," describes how the military troops were organized by believing in a legitimate authority to help control the jihad during the military regions of combat in Lebanon (Levitt). It focused on the need to terrorize, polarize and mobilize the troops to help target their enemies. The two articles have different themes: one focuses more on what is happening within Iraq, while the other focuses more on what is happening outside Iraq but still within its borders of Lebanon. The first article, "Iraq's Army Advances in Northern Mosul," discusses the military situation in northern Mosul, where the Iraqi army is fighting to retake the city from ISIS (Kamrava). This article focuses on the battle itself and how it is progressing. On the other hand, the second article, "ISIS Targets Lebanon, Activists Say," reports an attack by ISIS on a Lebanese town that killed more than 30 civilians and injured scores more CITATION Lev19 \l 1033 (Levitt). The article also includes interviews with residents about their experiences during the attack and how it has affected them. It indicates how many killings and property destruction have affected people's lives. Therefore, the effects in Lebanon are much greater than those in the Mosul region. The report also includes interviews with residents about their experiences during the attack and how it has affected them. The two articles are very different in tone, style, and approach. The first is a straightforward news story about the recent progress of Iraq's army in northern Mosul, Iraq. It describes the state of battle in the Northern and Southern regions by using transitions to describe the history and events. However, the second is a narrower piece, focusing on how the situation in Mosul has led to the targeting of Lebanon by ISIS (Levitt). The first article is written in an objective tone that highlights the military gains made by Iraqi forces against ISIS during their current push to take back Mosul. The article also contains brief interviews with some people involved in these battles and experts who have studied what has happened there over the last few years. The first article focuses on the ongoing conflict in Iraq, specifically on advancing Iraqi army for...
