Emmett Till’s death on Money, Mississippi
Emmett Till’s death offers a broader insight to how deeply racism may lead to murder, lynching and persecution of the non natives or the minorities. The death of the young boy clearly depicts a society that is blind to the rule of law that puts no one above it (Harold, Christine, and Michael 263). The three people that were involved in Till’s murder were, Roy Bryant, Carolyn Bryant, and J Milam. They claimed that he offended Carolyn Bryant at her shop in money, Mississippi. Later, Roy Bryant and his brother, J.W. William went to Till’s uncle and abducted him. They took him away band mutilated his body after shooting him to death and then sank his body into the Tallahatchie River. Indeed, this heinous act that will go down the history o the American racism (Crowe and White 5). First, the Bryant family was to take the young to court for prosecution, if he indeed offended Carolyn Bryant.
The murder of Till is an indication that if one was African American or a n individual from another benthic minority, then they do not have right to live and right to be fairly hard in the courts of law. By immorally murdering till means power belonged to certain groups of people. Worse still, when the perpetrators of the murder were taken before talk of law to answer the charged, they were acquitted (Harold, Christine, and Michael 263) . It is very unfortunate that also the courts had elements of racism in making its judgments. One question that bogs our minds is that when and where the African American will get justice. The constitution prohibits killing of another person unless they are fairly tried in court f law, and the courts decides so.
After the retrieval of Till’s body , her mother insisted having his son buried publicly with an open casket to show the world the brutality African America people experience. Nonetheless, this has not achieved its goal even in the today’s American society. There several instances of racism where killing and brutality has been meted on the people based on the race and ethnic background. What is more, instances of police brutality and persecution of the African American citizens has been on the increase (Harold, Christine, and Michael 265). However, the American society should realize that racism can only drawback the gains it has made for many years. The American dream can be achieved collectively regardless of one race or color.
The killing of Till reminds the world of a society that is intolerant of others.
