What Hollywood Blacklist was
Essentially, Hollywood blacklist formed the core practice that involved the process of denying employment to professionals in the entertainment industry such as screenwriters, actors, and musicians. It also included other American entertainment specialists who served during the mid of the 20th century. Even during the time when its strictest enforcement was executed from the late 1940s to the late 1950s, the Hollywood blacklist existence rarely became verifiable or explicit in whatever way.
How It Came About
Primarily, the Hollywood Blacklist came about when the House Committee that dealt with Un-American activities commenced carrying out the summons in 1947 to certain Hollywood entertainment employees who served at professional positions on grounds that they have suspicious allegations incriminating their work. They presumed that their major works were communist-inspired. As a matter of fact, the media started to do extensive coverage of all the possible proceedings. These actions led to the labeling of some writers, producers, and directors to be called the "Hollywood Ten." The individuals refused to tell the House Committee on whether they were members of the communist party or not. In fact, they alleged that the questions asked by the committee during the interrogation period infringed their rights that were initially protected by the Constitution.
Effects and Duration of the Hollywood Blacklist
Lack of cooperation forced the panel to seek the assistance of the House Representatives who managed to cast 346 to 17 votes to approve once and for all the contempt citations. The suspected professionals were imprisoned and fined in 1950. From then on, they were blacklisted so that they face difficult times when looking for a job elsewhere in media-based production companies. It lasted for three years.
