Latin America faces many challenges that emanate from its colonial history and mismanagement by previous administrations. In the past, the region had to deal with a debt crisis, military dictatorships, and authoritarian imposition of policies by western powers. Internally, the region has to deal with massive unemployment, environmental degradation, and urban poverty. Other challenges include the uneven distribution of wealth and the consequences of industrialization and globalization. The colonial history of the area and the mismanagement of the countries are responsible for the challenges the people face today.
