The medieval world travel points to the idea of the Silk Road being a vast area. It points to a picture of a zone without civilization. In the sense that traders would be attacked and looting is the order of the day without the protection of the government. The interesting part is that those with the protection of the Khan would move freely and widely just like Marco Polo. The Italian is famous for traveling to Asia during this time and trading in the Silk Road. The protection he had from the government made his trips easier.
