Metz’s understanding of historical consciousness
In the events surrounding the Hurricane Katrina, many people around Gulf coast were faced by sufferings, due to the destruction that happened. This is a historical event that has forever remained in the memories of the deceased and those who were affected by the event. In this event, many people suffered and compassion was seen in groups of Christians who came to rescue and help those who were affected by the event. A lot of Christians were seen travelling and participating in the rebuilding of the New Orleans (William 14655).
There were questions of faith in this hurricane Katrina event since theologies contributed on harm and suffering rather than fostering healing to the event. In Metz’s understanding, Christians allow themselves to be interrupted by the suffering of others. In this event, most Christians allowed themselves to be interrupted by the suffering of others in trying to show their compassion to the victims of suffering. This memory of human suffering brings personal and political consequences to them. Christian spirituality is radically apocalyptic since they focus so much on the future of the suffering and the useless of the earth. Political domination and social power have continuously justified themselves in light of Christian recollection of suffering.
There is a kind of memory that acknowledges the reality in the suffering of human.
