Comparing President Andrew Jackson and President Martin Van Buren (Essay Sample)
This paper was in history and was comparing President Andrew Jackson to President Martin Van Buren from two perspectives. Firstly, the article addressed how their presidencies advocated for the common man’s interests. Secondly, it discussed how both presidencies undermined democracy and fairness. The paper highlighted the main points of contrast in their presidencies as the eviction of Indian tribes from the East of the Mississippi River, complacency and integrity, and protracted war. From the discussion, President Jackson appears to have the common man’s interest at hand by passing the Indian Removal Act that required them to move west of the Mississippi River. President Van Buren actually enforces their removal and sends an army to enforce a bloody removal. The distinction is further exemplified under complacency and integrity where President Jackson does not support the Supreme Court’s decision against the State of Georgia’s planned eviction of the Cherokee tribe. The paper found that both men had White settler interests at heart but President Jackson uses manipulation that seems to favor the tribesmen while in actual sense it also favors the White settlers.

Since the end of the 1812 War, America has witnessed social changes towards an economy of enterprises. Unlike many former English colonies, the end of the war brought significant equality levels among the citizens. Alexis de Tocqueville confirms this by saying, "So, in America, democracy is given over to its own inclinations. Its pace is natural, and all its movements are free" (Tocqueville and Kramnick n.p). Interestingly, as the masses were working hard, the aristocracy that would not get their hands dirty for the nation's growth was frowned upon. The philosophy favoured the 'common man'. Notable of such periods are the great men behind the philosophical drive of the 'common man'. Whereas some presidents have favoured the common man, others have been frustrating any progress towards equality in society. There is no better exemplification of this fact than an examination into President Andrew Jackson and his successor President Martin Van Buren's presidencies. This article looks at how both worked towards the common man's interest versus how both undermined democracy and fairness.
