Examples of Violence against Black People during Reconstruction and Nadir Era
From the end of Reconstruction in 1877 to the commencement of the early 20th century in the United States, Black Americans suffered from high levels of pronounced racism. There were a lot of violent cases that befell them, thus messing with their civil rights. For instance, during the Nadir Era, most Black Americans were not allowed to own guns as the leaders assumed they hey instilled more fear in the whites than admiration. Three servants who were found to own guns were sentenced on July 9, 1640, who had attempted to run away but were then recaptured in Maryland. Since all the three servants were not all black, the one who was black, John Punch, was sentenced to slashed and indentured servitude for the rest of his life as the rest were subjected to the same for only four years.
In addition, on April 12, 1864, about 292 Black soldiers got split in combat and engaged in a battle in Fort Pillow, Tennessee. They elected a general, Nathan Bedford, who was to lead them into a war and lost after they were ambushed and were sent pouring into the font down the Mississippi River and into a crossfire. Moreover, George shorter was arrested on December 17, 1867, and was assumed to be from Illinois. He was arrested after being accused of Blacks who had settled in Bullock Country, Alabama. He had asked the Black people to get aside and set a separate form of government. In addition, the Klan that had settled in Arkansas was announced as an illegal organization on March 13, 1869, further indicating how the Blacks kept facing violence in the Reconstruction era.
