Discussion—Biomes, Development, Pollution, and You
The identified biome in Norwalk, California is chaparral. It is known to be both hot and dry. In terms of temperature, winter time is minimal and the temperature is approximately 10⁰C. Summer time is extremely hot and dry at 40⁰C that can cause droughts and fires around the area. It is composed of several terrains like, flat, rocky, and mountain slopes.
Humans mostly build tourist attractions and buildings, which are a major threat to the biome. It is also where they build structures for industries and factories that can affect the organisms which rely on the naturally occurring forest fire to survive. Before building these structures, there is a necessity to cut down trees, grasses, and brush, which are home to several species of birds and animals. This puts the biotic factors of the chaparral in peril, but also impacts the abiotic factors by converting natural landscape for building structures. The species that suffer from this are the California gnatcatcher, Coast horned lizard, Rosy boa, Heermann Kangaroo rat, White-eared pocket mouse, and the Santa Cruz kangaroo rat.
A major pollution issue in the chaparral of California is air pollution due to industrialism, manufacturing of goods, and combustion from cars or other vehicles. This negatively impacts the amphibians more than others. It is because the amphibians breathe through their skin where the air pollutants pass through to enter their body and this endangers their health that could lead to death. This issue can also affect the survi...
