Nyangaresi Essay March 26, 2015 DREAMS             Dreams can literally be described as the successive images, emotions or feelings that occur reluctantly in a person’s mind during sleep. On the other hand, different people have described dreams differently in relation to different fields, for example, spiritually dreams have been described as messages from the gods, psychologically as manifestations of the subliminal and physiologically as the answer to the neural procedure at the time of sleep.             Apart from the literal description and definition of dreams, Shipler gives a very interesting story about “Dreams” of which he talks of the American Dream, a vision of a ground which living should be wealthier and fuller for every mankind with an opening for each according to triumph. The American dream is a national philosophy of the United States wherein independence includes the pledge of the opportunity of affluence and achievement. The philosophy points out the capability of each person to reach success. According to the dream, this consists of the chance for one’s kids to grow up and attain good schooling and profession without any synthetic obstacle.             Generally, the American Dream is highly concerned with the spiritual pleasure than the substance goods. Many people believe that working hard is the main component for success while a marginal believe that toil and determination does not pledge achievement. It’s in Shipler’s powerful human study that the unnoticeable poor are seen engaging themselves in the most considerate activities only to find their tale of the American dream is a nightmare, dead-end, low-paying jobs. Shipler portrays the subject by taking us through the irritating lives of the poor. Different kinds of workers are seen being exploited in different ways while employers are busy fighting hard to beat competition and at the same time find the most qualified workers, in this case it’s clear that the unnoticeable poor practically bound in poverty, blacks and whites, Asians and Latino as well as women and men work extremely hard to perform the labour fundamentals to the comfort of America. Shipler clearly shows how perfectly right both the liberals and the conformists are towards the fact that failure is contained in every life story practically by both the society and the individuals. Supported by his personal testimony he reveals the power that detains individuals in the dilemma of little income, (236). Contrasting poverty works, he is able to give the picture of employers fighting hard against skeletal returns and competition. The issues of educational inequality and parents and teachers’ struggles are so very well addressed. Shipler clearly challenges the saying of attaining your own success through hard work of which is no longer the case for the majority in America. This is because of the several families and persons who are working very hard but barely are able to manage the normal day to day basic needs like food, clothing and shelter. Being one of the witness in their lives Shipler states that its not only the low level of education that pins the poor down but a number of factors that form a symbiotic web that is always too strong to crack. This can be accompanied by a very good example of maybe an educated single mother who falls in a low-income bracket is taking care of her three kids and therefore only affords rent for a mouldy house. This condition makes it worse for one of her kid’s asthmatic situation. Due to her time offs from work to check k on her kid, the employer gets tired and finally firing her. Despite her continuous plea to the landlord to fix the house condition, the pleas fall into deaf ears and the landlord does nothing to fix the problem therefore worsening the asthmatic kid’s condition.
