The future of post human creatures entirely lies in the hands of modern human beings.
Introduction
Advancements in biomedicine pose a threat to humanity in future. This is because it is likely to alter humanity beyond recognition in the near future. Biomedicine is the application of biology and bodily processes to clinical medicine. Man’s understanding of human nature has changed over the years. The key determinant of post human future is science. Advanced science and technology proves to be dangerous as its abilities could result to harmful outcomes. Distinction between science fiction and factual science is waning. Scientists are experimenting to fulfill science fiction. Modern biotechnology promises to modify human nature resulting to a shift to post human phase in history. The presence of nanotechnology has made almost anything possible in the modern world. The English dictionary defines nanotechnology as the science and technology of generating nanoparticles and of engineering equipment, which have the dimensions within the range of nanometers. Insights of nanomachines suggest that they will be able to execute complex operations. Programming of the machines will enable them to perform human functions perfectly. These functions include cleaning laundry, fabricate car engines and even furniture, or prepare food. Effects of biotechnology and information technology are highly appreciated currently because of their positive nature. These effects however may turn out negative in the near future, as they will put an end to history. This paper focuses on the issue of post human futures in relation to social critics such as gender roles, racism, stereotypes, and industrialization.
Biomedicine and nanotechnology
Dawn is a science fiction book that talks about a woman: Lilith Iyapo. Lilith loses her husband and son in a nuclear war. This war destroys earth completely as aliens struggle to save human kind from extinction. Lilith is among the few who survive in the war after a rescue by the aliens. The aliens make the humans sleep for centuries in a bid to study them. Later Lilith wakes and is tasked with reviving the humans and preparing them for survival in the wilderness. Aliens plan to inhabit earth for the first time again. These creatures plan to restore life back to earth. In this book, Lilith handles the job of preparing humans to accept aliens and live together. The social aspect of the story comes out in this place. Humans and aliens have to correlate in the next world. Post human future in this aspect embraces sociology. Aliens who saved humans learn about them and come in peace to maintain peaceful leaving. Lilith has to prepare her fellow human how to survive in the wilderness. The aliens, better known as the Oankali in the book, cannot strive by themselves. Their generation has to continue but only by the help of humans. This means that the children of human being swill not be humans. The inception of technology brought about the idea of post human futures (Bostrom, 4). Post human future bases on technology and biomedical sciences. The onset of technology brought the idea of science fiction and later post human futures. Development of technology determines the rise of post human condition. The more the development, the higher the post human condition rises. Technology used in post human future comes with an extensive variety of consequences. Nanotechnology has its repercussions that run from manufacturing to computing. Natural laws inhibit development at some point. This explains why some people including scientist are skeptical about post human futures. Advancement in technology overtime gives hope to scientists to fulfill post human futures. Aspects such as racism, gender role, and stereotyping however limit the fulfilment of post human futures. The power to fulfill post human futures lies in the hands of human beings. Humans could decide not to pursue this dream, with the realty that they cannot reach a certain level of human nature. Post human futures are a dream held by a number of humans but does not seem realistic.
Social critics
Avatar is a mechanical revolution film that has an anti-war message. The movie is set in the year 2154, involving a mission of the United States army to an earth-sized moon round a huge star. This is a world called Pandora and it contains a rich mineral earth is in dire need of. Pandora has a forest where a species known as the Na’vi inhabit. These creatures are blue-skinned in race and have golden eyes. They are slim and huge in size. Pandora poses no danger to earth in any way, but ex-military soldiers still go on a mission to triumph over the peaceful planet. Humans create Avatars, creatures that resemble Na’vis, to help them in their quest to conquer the rather peaceful planet. The Avatars have feelings, they fear, taste, taste, see and feel like Na’vi. Avatar gives answers to a few questions concerning social critics such as racism, gender role, and stereotypes. Avatar presents primitivism in its theme story line. Primitivism is an opinion that life was better among primitive people but it has deteriorated with civilization. The alien species in Pandora showed low advancement scientifically than humans. Na’vi people well-embraced nature and lacked sophisticated weapons like those of American soldiers. Post human futures promise not to be peaceful if one group tries to forcefully influence another group social or culturally. This comes clear in Avatar when Jake Sully tries to save the Na’vi from the humans, as the humans step forward to overpower the Nazi. The humans want to wipe out the primitive but the brave Jake Sully diverts in the human plans ad saves the primitive Na’vi. Jake Sully understood and felt like a Na’vi once he was in the body of the Na’vis (Cameron, Avatar). This prompts him to act in favor of the Na’vi. Jake underwent the experiences and emotions of the Na’vi. By undergoing their experiences, Jake could not carry out the plan as staged earlier. Post human futures will also not run smoothly unless a representative from each side is available to feel what the other feels. Success of post human future promises to succeed only if post human creatures and normal humans agree and understand each other. Lack of this will spew up a war instead of accomplishing a scientific breakthrough.
Stereotyping
In the movie, Avatar, the Na’vi rhyme with nature. These creatures relate passions to plant and animals. The decoration of Na’vi bodies blend with nature. These represent stereotypical views of the Native Americans. Native Americans have similar lifestyles compared to the Na’vi. Native Americans communicated with animals and some still do. This applies to the Na’vi. The Na’vi physically bond with animals when communicating. This takes place by a Na’ vi taking his or her hair and bonding it to another bonding site from the animal’s side. The brave Neytiri at some point saves Jake’s life (Cameron, Avatar). This is unexpected, as Jake knew the Na’vi was targeting him for lunch. Jake introduces himself to Neytiri and instantly, it is evident that Neytiri shows some Native American culture. The fact that she translates everything her dad says to Jake relates to Native Americans. Neytiri acts as a translator to some of the colonizers in the Na’vi planet. The Na’vi holds similar opinions with Native Americans. Their humility and good gestures are a reflection of Native Americans. Their way of life in a way resembles that of Native America for example conversing with animals. Post human future could hold the same stereotypical values of humans. Scientist looking for a breakthrough in post human futures need to inculcate human behavior in post human futures to enable the possibility of same stereotypical values between modern beings and post human future. Different stereotyping between modern human and post human futures may strain the relationship between creatures from the two different worlds. Stereotyping could turn out positive depending on the angle taken by scientists to create post human creatures. The movie Avatar explains that if the Native American won in the conquest of America, they would continue with their cultural practices. The same way the Na’vi continue to embrace their cultural practices, Native Americans would have influenced America to practice their cultures.
